Mica has been self-employed his whole life. Born and raised in Port Alberni, he started his career at the age of 7, planting, germinating and caring for flowers. He then hired his siblings and neighbours to harvest and sell them at road side stands. 20 years later, after paper routes, landscaping ventures, and over 50 seasonal jobs in 3 countries, he bought Whiskey Creek Christmas Farm. The farm has tripled in sales, profit and size under his management. The farm offers a U-Cut and runs several tree lots on Vancouver Island. In addition, it now donates over $4,000 to charities annually.
Mica’s next venture was commercial fishing, which he started in 2003. In 2009, he bought his own vessel, the 35 foot “Canadian Lady”. After a fantastic first year, he purchased a much bigger vessel, the “Pacific Quest”. While Mica really enjoyed prawn and tuna fishing, opportunity encouraged him to expand his horizons.
In 2013, Mica purchased Northwest Aquaculture from Rob Tryon, whose oyster lease in Barkley Sound was home to the Effingham Oyster or "Effing Oyster". Oyster farming had many similarities to Christmas tree farming; which involves planting, maintaining, marketing, and harvesting. Mica’s background in the marine industry, including safety, engine maintenance, pollution prevention and regulations, boat and navigation skills, mooring, anchors, rope and line handling, allowed him to smoothly transition into running Northwest Aquaculture and Effingham Oysters Inc., home of the official Effingham Oyster. Mica has since added 4 more oyster leases in Barkley Sound to his portfolio.
Mica and Victoria met in December 2014, since then she's been learning the "behind the scenes" of oyster farming in her spare time. Her day job as an Engineer keeps her busy as well as her love of triathlon.
